We often compare ourselves to the images and lifestyles we see online, which can lead to feelings of inadequacy or insecurity. The more time you spend immersed in this, the deeper these feelings can grow.
  • Addiction and FOMO (Fear of Missing Out): The more you check your phone or scroll through social media, the harder it becomes to step away. You might feel like you're missing out on something or that you need to stay connected at all times. This creates a cycle of addiction where your mind is constantly fixated on your device, even when you don’t want it to be.
  • Decreased Attention and Focus: Spending too much time switching between apps, websites, or games can reduce your ability to focus on tasks. The constant barrage of notifications and updates trains your brain to become distracted, making it harder to concentrate on work, school, or even conversations with loved ones.

Do you remember, my dear, when we used to sit around the dinner table and talk? Or when we took the time to meet friends in person, to laugh and share moments together? Unfortunately, screens are now often the barrier between real-life interactions.

  • Weakening Relationships: The more you immerse yourself in your devices, the less time you spend with the people who truly matter to you. It’s easy to get lost in a conversation online or in a video game, but these digital interactions don’t replace the value of face-to-face communication. The art of conversation, of reading body language, of laughing together in person, is slowly being lost.
  • Loneliness and Isolation: Ironically, the more time you spend online, the more you might feel disconnected from the world around you. Social media can give you the illusion of being connected, but in reality, it can lead to feelings of loneliness and isolation. You're surrounded by people, but you may not have the deep, meaningful connections that nourish your soul.


4. Reduced Productivity

Time, my dear, is precious. And I know you want to make the most of it. But when you get caught up in endless scrolling, binging on TV shows, or mindlessly playing games, it steals away the time you could be using for more meaningful activities.

  • Procrastination and Time Wasting: If you’re spending too much time on your phone or computer, you’re not focusing on your goals or responsibilities. Before you know it, the hours have slipped away, and you haven’t achieved what you set out to do. This can cause stress, and even guilt, later on.

Sometimes, my dear, we turn to screens as a way to escape. Life can be tough, and the digital world provides a distraction from the challenges we face. But relying too much on screens to avoid our problems can prevent us from addressing what's truly important.

  • Emotional Avoidance: If you’re constantly using screens as a way to escape from difficult emotions or situations, you’re not dealing with the underlying causes. It's like putting a bandaid over a wound without healing it properly. Over time, this avoidance can lead to unresolved emotions, and in turn, deeper issues.
  • Unrealistic Expectations: Another dangerous aspect of the digital world is the expectation it sets. We see people living idealized versions of their lives, often curated to perfection. This can create unrealistic expectations and make you feel like your life is lacking in comparison. It’s important to recognize that what you see online is often not the whole truth.


How to Regain Control of Your Time

My dear, I want to offer you some wisdom. There’s no need to eliminate screens from your life completely, but it’s important to regain control. Here are a few tips to help you balance your screen time:

  1. Set Boundaries: Limit your screen time each day, and set specific times for work, play, and rest. Try to take breaks every hour to stretch and rest your eyes.
  2. Engage in Offline Activities: Find hobbies that don’t require a screen, like reading, cooking, painting, or going for walks. These activities will help restore balance and nourish your mind.
  3. Unplug Before Bed: Avoid using screens at least one hour before bed. This helps your body wind down and prepares you for a restful night’s sleep.
  4. Mindful Social Media Use: Be mindful of the time you spend on social media. Set time limits, and be intentional with your use. Follow accounts that inspire you rather than leave you feeling drained or inadequate.
  5. Cultivate Real Relationships: Make time to connect with people face-to-face. Go for coffee with a friend, have a heart-to-heart conversation with a loved one, or simply enjoy quality time together without screens.
